bariatric services

bariatric servicesYou've tried every fad diet. You've tried appetite suppressants and other miracle pills guaranteed to melt away extra pounds, And you're still not able to lose the weight, Or you've lost the weight only to gain it back again and then some.

You're not alone. According to the Surgeon General, sixty-one percent of all Americans are classified as overweight or obese. And with heightened risks for heart disease, stroke, diabetes and cancer, carrying extra weight can become a matter of life and death. The Surgical Weight Loss Program at St. Joseph's Area Health Services offers hope.

New Hope for Severe Obesity

Center of ExcellenceThe Surgical Weight Loss Program at St. Joseph's Area Health Services offers weight-reduction surgery for severely obese people who have significant health conditions related to their weight. St. Joseph's performed more than 340 surgeries in 2003, and is on target to perform more than 400 in 2004. The large volume of procedures together with our dedicated team and specialized unit makes possible better long-term success rates. Our patients normally lose 70-85 percent of their excess body weight during the first 12 to 18 months.

St. Joseph's has high success rates with the Roux-en-Y laparoscopic gastric bypass procedure, and has now added the Lap-Band System. This gives morbidly obese patients alternatives when considering weight-loss procedures.

"Thus, the question as to whether intentional weight loss (bariatric surgery) improves life span has been answered and the answer appears to be a resounding yes."
