
Here at St. Joseph's Area Health Services, we will not perform weight-reduction surgery merely because someone is overweight or for cosmetic reasons. The person must have a high risk for developing health problems or have a weight-related health problem that could likely improve by losing significant amounts of weight. You will need to request a referral from your family physician.
Health problems that can result from obesity include:
- High blood pressure
- Diabetes
- Hyperlipidemia
- Sleep apnea
- Heart disease
- Degenerative joint disease
Determining if you are at risk
Body Mass Index (BMI) is one way to determine if the extra pounds you carry puts you at risk for weight-related health problems. BMI is measured by comparing height and weight to determine the amount of body fat. To calculate your BMI, enter your height and weight below and click "CALCULATE." Next, use the chart below to determine your risk factor based on your BMI.
