Emergency Medical Services Jobs

Emergency medical services are usually the first respondent to arrive at a scene of an emergency. Vehicles or helicopters will respond to the incident and provide care for the patient and continue treatment while being transported to a hospital if necessary. Emergency medical services jobs are part of a large community system to ensure the safety and well being of the public.

Purposes for EMS include:

-Detection- Understanding there’s a problem.

-Reporting- Making the call stating there is an emergency.

-Response- Getting to the scene of the emergency quickly.

-On-site care- Treat patients and stabilize.

-Transfer- Continue treatment in transit to a hospital.

Care Levels

First Aid– Such as checking stats, bandaging, etc..

-Basic Support- Administering fluids and meds if necessary.

-Intermediate Support- Expanded care of the basic level.

-Advanced Support- Used if a higher treatment plan is needed

Different Jobs within Emergency Medical Service

-Emergency medical dispatcher-This is the personnel that gives all information, instruction, and directions to the respondents.

-Drivers- Ones who drive the vehicle to the scene of an emergency.

-First Responder- This is the person who evaluates the situation and administers first aid if necessary.

-Emergency medical technician- EMT’s are trained in a wide range of medical care to treat patients.

Paramedics– With an even higher level of medical training to care for the emergency victim

Training to work in the emergency medical service field can take 1-3 years. Completing basic or advanced training and passing required tests are necessary and there are options for further training and schooling if desired.
